Our Story
In 1994, Christmas in April 
Petersburg instituted a one day neighborhood revitalization program in the Old Town Neighborhood. The pilot program, named Christmas in April Petersburg, was modeled after the national Christmas In April USA program (now Rebuilding Together). Implemented to repair the houses of the city’s low-income elderly and disabled homeowners, that year the program used volunteer labor along with donated and purchased building material to paint and repair 3 homes. There were 150 volunteers provided by corporations and community groups; the total budget was raised through corporate donations.
Why did we change our name?
Following the lead of our national organization, Christmas in April Petersburg has changed its name to Rebuilding Together Petersburg. Our mission remains the same—to preserve houses and neighborhoods and assure a warm, safe, and dry home for people in need. The change to Rebuilding Together Petersburg is about new possibilities. We are re-energizing to help our neighbors age in place with an expanded Home Modification program. Our common goal is to make a sustainable impact through partnerships with and for our community.
